What is an epoxy floor coating?
An epoxy floor coating is a floor coating based on epoxy resin. This is a polymer with an important application in coatings. Epoxy flooring have become popular for industrial applications due to their abrasion resistance, good chemical and mechanical resistance, and liquid tightness.
This floor is dust-free, easy to keep clean and can be finished with either smooth or non-slip. This floor finish is applied by wiping and rolling (typical layer thickness about 0.2 to 0.3 mm with 2 coats). One drawback, however, is that epoxy can discolor under UV light.
Applications of epoxy floor coating
Epoxy floor coating is well suited for various applications in both commercial and industrial environments. It is widely used in factories, workshops, garages, warehouses, showrooms and other areas where high demands are placed on the durability, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the floor.
Epoxy floor coating is also popular in the food and beverage industry because of its liquid-proof and hygienic properties. Thus, it can be used in kitchens, bakeries, slaughterhouses and other areas where food is prepared and processed.
In short, epoxy floor coating can be used in almost any environment where a durable, professional and easy-to-maintain floor is desired. It is especially suitable for areas where high loads and heavy use are expected and where high standards of hygiene and safety are required.
Versions epoxy floor coating
Gacon provides epoxy floor coating floors in three different designs:
- Roller CoatingEpoxy floor coating is used as a roller coating on concrete and cement-based screeds with normal to medium loads in, for example, storage and logistics areas, production areas, workshops, garages, loading bays, etc.
- Sealing layer; It can also be used as a sealing layer for encrusted systems, such as for multi-level and underground parking garages, maintenance hangars and for wet process areas, e.g., in the beverage and food industries.
- Cast Flooring; Finally, a self-leveling screed on concrete and cementitious screeds with normal to medium loads.
Available in multiple colors
An epoxy floor coating is available in a number of standard colors in which some discoloration and color deviation may occur under the influence of direct sunlight. This discoloration does not affect the functionality and performance of the coating.
Maintenance and Cleaning
In roller coating, the floor coating runs parallel to the level of the substrate; a flat surface is obtained if the substrate is flat. The surface texture is thus strongly determined by the texture of the substrate. For this reason, diamond abrasion of the substrate may be chosen instead of machine ball blasting to avoid leaving blast marks visible.
An epoxy floor coating is suitable as a durable, seamless finish for cement and gypsum-based substrates. The high initial gloss of the solvent-free epoxy coating reduces to egg gloss after the floor is used.
For durable preservation of the floor finish, the floor should be cleaned regularly with brushes, scrubbers/suction machines, rubber squeegees, high-pressure cleaning etc. using suitable cleaning agents. Cleaning advice shall be provided for this purpose. In addition, all spilled contaminants should be removed as soon as possible.
Method of working epoxy floor coating
The duration of execution depends on the system construction, the surface to be treated and the number of layers. The duration of execution can vary from 2 to 5 days. Overall, these are the work we perform:
- Pretreatment substrate
- Applying primer
- Leveling if required
- Application of one or more coating or casting layers, possibly with anti-slip
Epoxy coating and vapor pressure
A water-based epoxy coating provides a vapor-permeable floor finish suitable for environments where vapor pressure can occur due to moisture transport from the substrate, such as basement floors below a ground level. The coating allows vapors to pass through, improving moisture control in the space and reducing the risk of mold, allergies and respiratory problems. In addition, a water-based epoxy coating is more environmentally friendly than traditional epoxy coatings and has a beautiful silk-gloss finish.
